Semiya Upma/ Rava Upma/ Vegetable Upma

Upma is a quick and easy breakfast which can be prepared with bare minimum ingredients. It can be had for dinner too. Most people may not like plain upma and so you can add few veggies to make it a little interesting. It is light, simple and quick. Can be prepared with rava or vermicelli/ semiya.

Ingredients
  • Semiya/ Vermicelli or Rava - 250 gms
  • Onion - 1 medium
  • Tomato - 1
  • Red chillies - 4-5
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon finely chopped 
  • Oil - 2-3 teaspoons
  • Mustard - 1 teaspoon
  • Urad dal - 1 teaspoon
  • Pottukadalai - 1/2 teaspoon (optional)
  • Curry leaves - 1 sprig
  • Coriander leaves - 4-5 stems
  • Vegetables - Carrot, beans, peas - 1 small cup (optional)
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4th teaspoon (optional)
Preparation
  • Take a frying pan and fry the vermicelli or rava until it turns light brown. Make sure it doesn't get burnt. 
  • Once done set it aside and in the same pan pour oil and temper with mustard, urad dal, pottukadalai (optional) for a minute. Then add ginger, red chillies and curry leaves. 
  • Add onions and fry until it turns light brown. Now add the chopped tomato and fry until it is a little mushy. Add turmeric (optional).
  • If using vegetables, add it now and pour a glass of water. Add salf and cover with a lid. 
  • Wait until the vegetables are 80% cooked. Now add the vermicelli or rava and mix it well and cook for 2-3 minutes. 
  • Finally garnish with coriander.
Plain Semiya Upma
Note : - If not using vegetables, just pour water and wait until it starts boiling then add the vermicelli or rava. The picture above is plain Semiya upma without vegetables.
